Love My Soul

The thing is, if you love someone for their outward characteristics or behaviors…your love is not exclusive to that person. If that person should pass, or if you part ways, inevitably you will encounter someone who has similar mannerisms and actions as your original lover (perhaps we even seek this pending a breakup of sorts). What is there now, to distinguish your love for the first person to this person? You may fall in love with the way she sleepily sips her favorite tea in bed every evening; what if you find your new lover has the same technique? Does your love now transfer to the new girl? Is it gone from the first girl? It is not exclusive. What if someone (as we all do) changes appearance from whence you first fell in love with him? Is the love gone with the fleeting handsomeness?

This again suggests that love is fickle and disloyal. Surely these cannot be the characteristics of love; love that we so fervently seek above all else in our life. If love is not true and lasting, what in this world is? This is not to say that we cannot and will not appreciate physical characteristics in the person that we love. But, we cannot base our love on these things. If we do, it will surely fall apart as a house built on the shifting sands of the beach. No, we must fall in love with something much greater than a human being. We must fall in love with a heart; a soul. There are many of us on this earth and will be many more in time that share physical traits, characteristics, preferences, and mannerisms. But none can ever share one soul. Our soul is the core of our being; it is who we are, essentially. All of our actions stem from who we are, which stems from our values, which begin in our heart. If you love someone, the way that Christ loves all of us, overlooking every outward trait and seeing straight into our souls, delighting in who we are, regardless of what we do, that, and only that love will last forever. That is pure, unequivocal, unconditional love. That is what we are ultimately seeking, whether we know it or not. Everyone wants to be known.

Love,

Jess
